ANNUAL CLUB SECTIONAL
The Bridge Center’s Annual Club Sectional will be held on Saturday, January 13 and Sunday, January 14, 2018. Full details are available on page 4.of the Newsletter.
Non-Life Masters: Don’t miss this opportunity to earn silver points at a fun event with great food and camaraderie.
BE WARM AND WELCOMING TO TRANSITIONING PLAYERS
The continuing success of our Bridge Center is dependent on our players who move from bridge classes and supervised play to participation in our low masterpoint games, then transitioning from low masterpoint games to NLM Games and finally to the Open game. In that regard we ask that when players are moving up we greet them with a smile and a warm welcome to the game, and that you don’t call the Director unless you have been damaged, but rather explain a minor transgression in a friendly information sharing manner. Over the years we have had many instances where players tried moving up, had a bad experience, which caused them to not return to the higher level game for months or years. Some of us are not aware of our own behavior and mannerisms, so before you dismiss these thoughts as applying to others only, think twice and be nice.
DUMMY DOS AND DON’TS
Please see the article on Dummy’s Responsibilities on page 3 of the Newsletter. It states the ACBL Law and has important information that you may not be aware of.
MISTAKEN EXPLANATION OR MISTAKEN CALL – LAW 25
This law has been restructured, and it is now clearer that failure to disclose information accurately constitutes misinformation that may lead to a score adjustment. Players should always disclose partnership agreements fully and freely upon request, but they also need to realize that answering inquiries from an opponent with words such as “I take it to mean” or “I think it means,” is improper. If no agreement exists, players are expected to state that fact, not guess what a bid means. Doing otherwise not only can cause misinformation leading to a score adjustment, but it also may give partner unauthorized information that may lead to a score adjustment.
SUNDAY GAME START TIMES
Beginning in January 2018, all our Sunday Games will begin at 12:30pm. We will serve a lite lunch at 12:00pm. This will allow us to participate in the Common Game on Sundays.
The Polls have closed and the votes have been cast. The four new members of the SOCBC Board of Directors have been determined and will be announced at our Holiday Party. Please join me in thanking the Directors who are not continuing on the Board in the coming year.
UNIT GAME- THANKSGIVING THEME
The November Unit Game was a great success. The food was wonderful – a true Thanksgiving Feast, followed by quality bridge and tasty desserts.
The transition of our Unit management responsibilities and functions has been going smoothly. Susan Kissinger, Ginnie Blitzman, Trudi Hanscom and Jeremy Chao, with help from Judy Elbogen, me and others have been doing a great job ensuring that we all continue to enjoy playing at our wonderful club with minimal disruption.
Don’t miss the SOCBC Annual Holiday Party, which will be held on December 9th. This wonderful event has sold out – as it does every year. If you have not signed up in time, you may still join us for breakfast, the Annual Membership Meeting and play in the morning session for a ten-dollar card fee or you may join us for wonderful desserts and the afternoon STaC game beginning at 3:30 PM for a card fee of $11. We encourage our non-life masters to attend this fun day and earn Silver Points.
FRIDAY NIGHT DUPLICATE & SOCIAL BRIDGE POT LUCK
We are reinstituting a fun, social event on the fourth Friday of the month beginning on January 25, 2018. We encourage players at all levels to come dine on upscale fare, and bring social bridge friends to play social bridge or experience duplicate bridge at our club in a relaxed atmosphere. I have appointed Sharon Rippy, Frances Krause, Bob Levine and Linda Jonas to a Committee to organize, promote and facilitate this event, with Frances and Sharon serving as Co-Chairs. Frances and Sharon have discussing various options for bringing a variation of this event back and Bob and Linda have also contributed promotional ideas, which the four of them with help from others will implement. We hope that each of you will extend personal invitations to your regular duplicate partners, social bridge friends, players who work during the day and even to your spouses with less bridge experience to join us on Friday evenings once a month. Details and pot luck sign-up sheets will follow. o
